Happy (Late) Holidays

I hope everyone had great holidays!  Christmas-Chanukah (or, as we like to call it, “Jewmas”) brought us wonderful things.  I’ll get to that in a second.  But first… some updates

Chicagoland M&G… TONIGHT!
There’s a M&G event tonight at Mr. Beef & Pizza.  I’m expecting the turnout to be stellar!  I didn’t keep tabs on who’s said they’re coming, but from the looks of things, a lot of folks will be there.  There’s even a model who’s in town visiting who will be coming by!  Awesome.  It should be good.  Seems the monthly thing at the same place is working out very well, with a bigger turnout each and every time.

Shoot Results… Sorta
I was supposed to have a shoot Friday.  I was really excited for this shoot, as it was with an excellent photographer looking to commercialize his book a bit.   Perfect!  He’d arranged a MUA, our ideas were perfectly in line, and all was going to be great.

I got to the studio a little later than I planned.  The weather was bad overnight, resulting in some ice that had to be scraped off the car and carefully navigated around on some of the side streets (and the sidewalk), so it took a bit longer to get started than I had anticipated.  But I got there more or less on time.

The MUA, however, was a different story.  Long story short, she didn’t show.  Which was really disappointing, to say the least.  She was someone I’d worked with before, enjoyed working with, and once I found out she was the one who was booked, was excited to be working with again.  But it just didn’t work out.  She decided, for whatever reason, not to come to shoot with me, as the photographer had planned.  He ended up canceling with her altogether.

And I had opted to not bring my makeup with me.  So we didn’t shoot.

Instead, the photographer and I chatted, checked out a space in his building, chose a date to reschedule, and discussed perhaps setting up a group shoot at some point. I hung around for a couple hours.  Part of me would have preferred to just go back home, but I’d driven a little over an hour (and nearly 50 miles) to the shoot, and I really wasn’t looking forward to the drive home right away.

I’m bummed about not shooting though.  I was really looking forward to cleaning out my portfolio and getting some excellent commercial shots.  I’m also bummed (and yes, pretty darn irritated) about the deal with the MUA.  She’s someone I frequently recommended to others, someone I enjoyed working with, and someone I looked forward to working with numerous times again.  As you can imagine, I likely won’t be working with her again, and won’t be recommending her to many others most likely.  Sucks, but that’s what happens

Happy Holidays
As I said before, the holidays brought us great things.  I got a Kitchen-Aid Mixmaster from my parents (as well as some baking pans, which are top-quality Calphanon).  I have yet to use any of them, but I know they will be great to use, hehe.  I’ve been lusting over a Mixmaster for some time, but especially over the past 6 months or so, since my ancient Oster Kitchen Center busted mid-recipe.

From my fiance’s family we got a Wii, which as you can imagine has so far been pretty fun 🙂  We bought Super Mario Bros. and Excitebike (yes, the original NES games) from the Wii store online and played them last night.  We have the Wii sports, which comes with the console, and another set of games that’s sort of like training for using the Wiimote… which I still surely need more work on LOL.  But it’s really fun, and I’m glad we have one now!  I’m sure I’ll be blogging about it more, as we get more games and stuff 🙂

From my fiance I got a Raymond Weil watch.  It’s beautiful, and nicer than any watch I’ve ever had.  It’s silver, with a mother of pearl face, little diamonds at the markers (except at 12, 3 and 9, where there’s roman numerals, and at 6 where there’s the date).  It’s absolutely lovely, and will look exquisite with my wedding dress 😀

We got a bunch of other stuff too.  Giftcards to food places (Chipolte, Outback, Starbucks), I got books, some clothes, and other stuff.  It was nice 🙂

We also finalized our bridal party, asking our neices and nephew to be flowergirls and the ringbearer.  Our neices were so excited.  It was super cute!  They’re 5, so for them it’s like the coolest thing ever.  They got flower girl dresses for their American Girl dolls too, so they were in heaven LOL.  Our nephew, who’s 7, has informed us that he’ll let us know, haha!  I think he’s excited too… provided he doesn’t have something else going on that day 😉 LOL!

All in all, things were nice this holiday season.  As they always are 🙂

Off to take the dog out, get ready, and run some errands before the M&G.

Chopsticking Oopsie Bear

I worked with Moe December 20th and we had a great time!  It was silly, crazy, and just  a fun time 🙂  I was fortunate enough to get some silly shots back, including this one below, which is my favorite of the “outtakes”.  Normally I don’t post outtake shots anywhere, but this one’s just hilarious.  And not too bad lookin’ either 😉

I bought the Care Bear (who’s name really is Oopsie Bear) for another shoot, but decided he’d be fun to bring along to this shoot as well.  And he suited our concept perfectly.  At one point, he needed to be moved, and the above happened.  He’s so into it, LOL!

Anyway, I’ll be sharing the final results of the shoot when they’re done.  I assure you they will be all kinds of kickass!

Breaking it down

I will soon be taking a bit of a break from modeling.

I need some spare time, and this is where I’m going to have to make a sacrifice. Especially since I’m working at a loss the bulk of the time on this hobby of mine.

I won’t be stopping modeling, and I won’t close down any profiles or quit hanging out in some of the forums, but I will not be accepting any more trade work. The only exceptions being trade shoots I already have lined up (or am in the process of scheduling). I’m sure there will be other exceptions down the road, as there always seem to be–phenomenal photographers, mindblowing concepts, whatever else–but I’m going to be really really selective from this point forth.  Moreso than I have been.

Taking a break will also give me a chance to sit down and really get some concrete things in place for where I want to go with modeling.  I’ll get a chance to maybe do some research, figure out who best to hire to get me the shots I need, and actually start moving in the direction I want to head in.

This will likely be in full effect by the end of January, while I finish up scheduling a few projects that I’ve been discussing with photographers.

A Model’s Business Cards

What goes on ’em?

At the very least, a model’s business cards should have her name, email address, a photo, and an address to an online portfolio or website. It should also say something like “model” somewhere.  Some models choose to add other info… I’ll list what I have on mine in a sec.

A photo allows photographers to remember your face after you’ve parted ways.  Your email address allows them to contact you easily, and if you want you can add your phone number (or leave space on the back to write it in if you wish).  A link to your website or online portfolio lets them go check out more photos, your stats, resume or list of credits, and whatever else you might put on your website.  And sticking the word “model” on your card?  It might seem like it’s not necessary, but if you’re at a convention or event where many other people might be handing out your cards, it will help the person who ends up with your card remember what it is you do.

On the front of my cards, I have a photo, my stats, my email, and as a courtesy, a small credit to the photographer.  The front of my card is in full color.  On the back I have numbers for the various modeling sites I’m on, my MySpace address, and my website address.  The back is in black and white, and there’s ample room to write additional info (like my phone number) if I need to.

Where to get ’em?

Here are a few different websites that are recommended for getting business cards. I personally have ordered from Modern Postcard before, and am pleased with the quality of what I got.  I also know someone who has cards from Moo, and they’re really nice as well… plus they make supercute tiny cards that are way cool.,,,,

But wait!  What about the design?!

Some of the websites above allow you to upload your own design.  If you have the ability to lay out your own card, go for it!  If you are going to do your own cards, make sure you use the template provided by the site you choose to purchase from (if they have one for download).  Also, before you place your order, print out your cards at the correct size to make sure you can read all of the important information clearly.

If you don’t want to (or can’t) design your own, you may choose to use a site that offers a pre-made template (perhaps one in which you can upload your own photo to), or see if any of the photographers you have worked with would be willing to lay something out for you for a small fee.

A Bittersweet Blush Victory For…

If you haven’t seen the Blush finale, stop reading now!

The Blush finale aired.  I watched. Before I get to the winner…

Todd did, in fact, pass away.  There was a (very) brief “In Memory of” screen that came up, with Todd’s name and photo, at the end of the episode.  It was rather unsatisfying, for me, but in light of when he passed, and the fact that (to my knowledge) there’s no real info about why he passed, I think it was sufficient.  And I’m glad they touched on it.  As far as I can tell, there’s nothing “official” on the Lifetime website (though I’m sure there’s stuff in the forums there).

And now, the winner…

Nolan won, despite his mistake in the 3rd fashion show look.  I thought everyone did a great job, but actually agreed with the judges when it came down to it.  Maxi’s work was… eh.  I liked his second look with the white line, but wasn’t keen on the arrows at all, and felt the stenciled stuff was too distracting.  But the judges loved it all, and I didn’t really agree with that.  I did agree that Maxi was just too dramatic, and that caused unnecessary chaos.  However, Todd, unfortunately, lost it for some reason, and it was really disappointing.  Overall, his stuff just fell flat, and that made me sad (sadder still that I knew that he wasn’t with us anymore).  But despite that, he had huge–everyone says potential, but I say fuck that, he had honest-to-goodness talent–and you could tell that he truly loved what he did, and loved life.  He was radiant, and a wonderfully gracious loser.  That alone made you realize what a great person he was.  His passing is a true loss to the industry, and to everyone who knew him in general.  My heart goes out to everyone.

I imagine the airing of tonight’s episode was bittersweet for Nolan.  It’s clear he and Todd became close friends throughout the course of the show, and winning the show, followed by the passing of a close friend, a friendship that was the result of the show… I can’t even imagine.  I send many virtual hugs to Nolan, and to the rest of those who knew and loved Todd.

Todd Homme

Apparently Todd Homme, from Blush has passed away. I can’t find much info, but here’s what I did find:

  • A comment on the Blush website, supposedly from Nolan, sharing the news: Link
  • An article on Busted Daily sharing the news: Link

Not sure about anything else… not sure what the show will do, as it’s still in season, and frankly, I’m not even sure how true it is. Mayhem is down, so I can’t even verify info there. On Todd’s MySpace page though, there are no RIP comments or anything of the sort yet.

I suppose if I hear any other news, I’ll update.

If it is the case that Todd has passed, I hope he rests in peace, and that his family, friends and loved ones all find comfort.

If it’s not the case that he’s passed… I don’t even know what to say, other than the fact that I apologize for aiding in spreading such a terrible rumor.

I hope the latter is true… :/

EDIT (12/16/08): It does seem to be true that Todd has passed away 😦 This article was linked on Mayhem, and last night I noticed a lot of comments on Nolan’s MySpace page relating to it. Todd was apparently found dead by his partner, and no drugs or alcohol played a factor in his death. They’re still trying to figure it out. Such a shame. He was so talented, and really seemed to love life. I adored him on Blush. Rest in peace, Todd. My deepest sympathies go out to Todd’s family, friends, loved ones, and colleagues.

Random update

I’ve got a lot going on and haven’t really updated lately.  Not that I don’t have a lot to say… I’ve got something like 38 drafted blog posts started.  I just haven’t had time to finish them.  Normally I’d sit down tonight and do some work… I have a great new header image that needs to be made and uploaded, as well as some awesome stuff in general to blog about… but I can’t tonight… I have other stuff that needs to get done.  Maybe.  I might just put it off and do it tomorrow night.

This is more a post just to let you all know I’m not dead 😉
